Discarding Your Herbal Products & Containers

We do our best to avoid waste — both financial and environmental — by carefully prescribing and dispensing only what’s needed. That said, we understand that sometimes herbal products go unused or expire.

Here’s how to safely and responsibly dispose of them, along with some tips for recycling certain containers.

Disposing Of Herbal Products

Raw herbs:
These can go directly into your organic waste or compost bin.

Pills, granules, tinctures, or topicals:
please bring them to your nearest pharmacy. Health Products Stewardship Association’s Returning Medications program accepts natural health products for safe disposal at no cost:

  • Pills and granules can go in a clear sealed plastic bag.

  • Tinctures and topical products can be brought in their original containers. Be sure to remove or cover any personal information on the label.

Recycling Small Containers (Including Beauty & Cosmetic Packaging)

Unfortunately, many small containers (smaller than a yogurt cup or your fist) — even if they seem recyclable — are often not accepted in curbside recycling. This includes many cosmetic, beauty, and health product containers.

Why not?

  • Too small for recycling machinery to detect or sort.

  • Mixed materials (like pumps or tubes) can’t be separated easily.

  • Plastics like #3, 4, 6, and 7 are not accepted by most municipal recycling facilities.

  • Unlabeled packaging makes it hard to identify recycling types.

To avoid landfill waste, you can drop these items off at specialty recycling partners:

Thank you for being mindful. Small actions — like proper disposal — support a healthier body and planet.
