Mini-Guide Series #11: Endocrine Disruptors — Silent Intruders

The hidden chemicals that can interfere with your body's hormonal signals


Hormones, by definition, have systemic effects. They affect not only one organ or body part, but influence how the body operates as a whole. When the hormonal system is disrupted, the body can struggle to maintain its normal day-to-day functions.

There are ways to limit or reduce some of these external influences by choosing how we live. This post explores what endocrine disruptors are, where they find their way into your body, and how to limit your exposure.

Endocrine? What is it?

Let’s first look at what “endocrine” means.

Endocrine simply refers to hormones and the organs that make them.

Hormones are chemical messengers made by your body. They travel through your bloodstream and tell different parts of your body what to do, when to grow, when to release an egg, when to produce energy, when to sleep, and much more.


Hormones? What are they?

So, hormones are messengers with keys. When a hormone reaches a receptor that matches it, it binds to that receptor and triggers changes in the target cell.

We cannot tell a hormone to work only on one part of the body and not another. What matters is where the appropriate receptors are located and how those tissues respond.

Some major endocrine organs are the thyroid, pancreas (for insulin), ovaries (for female reproductive hormones), and testes (for male reproductive hormones).

Receptors are distributed throughout the body. The uterus, for example, contains estrogen receptors, but estrogen receptors also exist in many other tissues, including fat tissue including breasts.


Endocrine disruptors: what happens?

And here's where things get interesting: some chemicals from outside the body can look enough like our natural hormones to interfere with these signals. They can act like a hormone, block a hormone, or interfere with how hormones are made or broken down.

These are called endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Some substances can bind to hormone receptors and mimic the action of a natural hormone. Others can block receptors, meaning the body's own hormone cannot act normally. Still others can alter how hormones are produced, transported, broken down, or removed from the body.

This matters because hormones work in very small amounts, and the endocrine system depends on carefully regulated signaling. Even relatively small changes can have biological effects, particularly during sensitive periods such as pregnancy, fetal development, infancy, puberty, and adolescence.

For example, estrogen is a hormone that plays an important role in the menstrual cycle, reproductive function, bone health, and many other processes.


Xenoestrogens

There are chemicals with estrogen-like activity, sometimes referred to as xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are a broader term for substances from outside the body that can have estrogen-like activity or interact with estrogen signaling.

They are not produced naturally by the human body. Some are synthetic chemicals, while others can occur naturally in the environment.

Examples of chemicals that have been studied for endocrine-disrupting or estrogenic activity include:

  • Bisphenol A (BPA): used in some plastics and epoxy resins

  • Certain phthalates: used as plasticizers and found in some cosmetics, fragrances, packaging, and other products

  • Some PFAS: a large family of highly persistent chemicals used in many industrial and consumer applications

  • Certain pesticides

  • Some industrial chemicals and flame retardants

Not all endocrine disruptors are xenoestrogens, and not all xenoestrogens work in exactly the same way. Some endocrine disruptors affect thyroid hormones, metabolism, reproductive hormones, or other hormonal pathways instead.

We cannot completely avoid exposure to these chemicals. The goal is to reduce unnecessary exposure where practical, especially for products and situations where safer alternatives are readily available.

For example, we can pay attention to the ingredients in cosmetics and personal-care products, reduce unnecessary contact with certain plastics, and consider how food packaging, household products, dust, air, and water can contribute to our overall exposure.


Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are different.

They are naturally occurring plant compounds that have chemical structures somewhat similar to estrogen and can interact with estrogen receptors. 

They are sometimes described as “plant estrogens.” Phytoestrogens generally have much weaker and more complex effects than the body's own estrogen. Depending on the tissue and hormonal environment, they can have estrogen-like or anti-estrogen-like effects. 

Some common dietary sources include:

  • Soybeans

  • Tofu

  • Tempeh

  • Edamame

  • Flaxseed

  • Some other legumes and plant foods


Why should we care?

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a relatively modern environmental concern, especially because many synthetic chemicals are now widespread in our food, water, air, household products, cosmetics, plastics, and personal-care products.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, of course, developed long before the existence of most modern synthetic chemicals and therefore does not have a traditional framework specifically for substances such as BPA, PFAS, or phthalates.

However, we can still examine how modern environmental exposures may affect the body and interpret those observations through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The goal is about becoming more aware of what we are repeatedly exposed to, where exposure can reasonably be reduced, and how small choices may collectively reduce our overall chemical burden.

Sometimes, the simplest intervention is simply choosing a different product. A little less exposure, a little more awareness.
